Bamboo raft adventure inside Tham Lod Cave in Northern Thailand with a local guide

Northern Thailand Tour 6 days

A definitive journey through the soul of Northern Thailand. This 6-day expedition is meticulously designed to showcase the incredible diversity of the region. From the vibrant culture of Chiang Mai to the mystical valleys of Pai and the 1,864 panoramic curves of Mae Hong Son, you will traverse mist-covered mountains to reach the legendary Golden Triangle.

More than just a tour, it is a complete immersion into authentic Thai life and breathtaking landscapes—perfect for those who want to experience the North without missing a single detail.

Day 1: Mok Fah Waterfall & The Valley of Pai

08:30 AM: Your professional guide will meet you at your hotel lobby in Chiang Mai. After a brief briefing, we begin our journey towards the northwest, leaving the city behind for the lush mountain landscapes.

Nature & Adventure: Our first stop is the stunning Mok Fah Waterfall. We will follow a nature trail to reach this 60-meter-high cascade. The waterfall is perfect for a refreshing swim in its natural pool, so we highly recommend bringing suitable swimwear and a towel!

Coffee & Local Life: After the trek, we take a relaxing break at a unique local coffee shop that manages a small flock of sheep—a perfect spot for photos and a taste of local mountain coffee. We then continue our drive to Baan Santichon, a charming Yunnanese Chinese village. Here, you can explore ancient-style dwellings and discover local products, with a special focus on their world-renowned high-quality Green Tea.

Lunch: A break for lunch will be held at the village, where you can choose from various local specialties (Meals not included, to be paid on-site).

The Sunset Challenge: We conclude the day at Wat Phra That Mae Yen, the most panoramic temple in Pai. To reach the famous “White Buddha,” there is a long staircase that requires a bit of physical effort, but the reward is incomparable: a unique, breath-taking view over the entire Pai Valley, especially magical during the sunset hour.

Accommodation: Arrival at the hotel and check-in. Evening at your leisure to explore the Pai Night Market.

Day 2: The Tham Lod Cave System & Mae Hong Son Temples

08:30 AM: Departure from your hotel. Today we head towards the remote province of Mae Hong Son to explore one of Southeast Asia’s most impressive cave systems.

Tham Lod Cave Exploration: Upon arrival, we will meet a local specialized guide equipped with an electric lantern. The visit is divided into three stages and lasts approximately 2 hours:

  • First Part: We board a traditional bamboo raft to enter the cave through the underground river. You will navigate through the first gallery, home to massive stalactites and stalagmites in high, cathedral-like chambers.
  • Second Part: In the middle of the cave, we disembark for a walking tour. This is the most incredible part of the system, allowing you to access hidden formations and prehistoric burial sites reachable only on foot.
  • Third Part: We return to the bamboo raft to navigate the final section and exit the cave system on the opposite side.

Lunch Break: After the exploration, we stop for lunch at the entrance of the National Park. There are several local eateries offering authentic Northern Thai cuisine (Meals not included).

Mae Hong Son Temples: In the afternoon, we reach the city of Mae Hong Son to visit the “Twin Temples” of Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang, famous for their Burmese-style architecture reflecting in the lake. We conclude at Wat Phra That Doi Khong Mu, located on the hilltop, offering the best panoramic view of the entire valley.

Accommodation: Check-in at the hotel in Mae Hong Son. Evening at your leisure.

Day 3: Long Neck Karen Heritage & The Pai Canyon

08:30 AM: After exploring the vibrant morning market of Mae Hong Son, we head towards the river for an immersive cultural experience.

The Kayan Village: This remote village is accessible only by water. We will reach the boat pier located about 15km from Mae Hong Son for a 30-minute scenic trip along the Pai River. Upon arrival, you will visit the Long Neck Karen (Kayan) community. You can observe their daily life, visit the local primary school, and watch the women expertly weaving traditional textiles.

Cultural Insight: The famous brass coils worn by the women are a deeply rooted cultural tradition. In modern times, this practice is a choice of identity and cultural pride, preserved by the community to keep their heritage alive. It is a respectful encounter that offers a unique glimpse into an ancient lifestyle.

Pai Canyon & History: Our journey continues toward the Pai Canyon, a natural wonder where you can enjoy a 30-minute trek along its narrow ridges or simply admire the sweeping views of the valley. For lunch, we stop near the Historical WWII Memorial Bridge, an iconic iron structure built during the conflict. After visiting the bridge and exploring the local stalls, we begin our scenic drive back to Chiang Mai.

Lunch Break: Lunch will be held near the Memorial Bridge (Meals not included).

Accommodation: Arrival in Chiang Mai in the late evening and check-in at your hotel.

Day 4: Spiritual Doi Suthep & Lanna Craftsmanship

08:30 AM: Your guide will meet you for a day dedicated to the spiritual heart and artistic soul of Chiang Mai.

The Legend of Doi Suthep: We ascend the mountain (1,676 meters) to reach Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the most sacred landmark in Northern Thailand. According to legend, the site was chosen by a sacred white elephant carrying a relic of the Buddha; after climbing the mountain, the elephant trumpeted three times and knelt at this very spot. To fully experience the temple’s majesty, we will climb the 306 steps of the Naga-lined staircase, while the descent can be comfortably made by funicular.

Temple Etiquette & Views: From the outer terrace, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city. Please remember that as a sacred site, shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes removed before entering the inner courtyard. After the visit, you will have time for some shopping at the local stalls specializing in sacred items and amulets.

City Temples: We return to the old city to visit Wat Phra Singh (The Lion Temple). Built in 1345, it is a prime example of classic Lanna architecture and houses the highly revered Phra Singh Buddha image.

Sankamphaeng Artisans: In the afternoon, we explore the Sankamphaeng district. Rather than a single site, this area is a vibrant hub of traditional workshops. We will visit several specialized boutiques and factories where you can see master artisans at work: from the famous hand-painted paper umbrellas and fine Celadon ceramics to high-quality Thai silk and precious gemstones.

07:00 PM – Khantoke Dinner Experience: Your guide will pick you up from your hotel for a traditional Lanna evening. The Khantoke Dinner is a classic Northern Thai banquet where guests sit on the floor around a small circular wooden table (the Khantoke). You will taste a variety of local delicacies, such as Gaeng Hang Lay (Northern pork curry) and sticky rice, while enjoying a spectacular performance of Lanna folk dances and hill tribe music. It is the most authentic way to celebrate the hospitality of the North.

Overnight in Chiang Mai. (Lunch not included; Khantoke Dinner included).

Day 5: Elephant Sanctuary & The Bamboo River Rafting

08:30 AM: Your guide will pick you up from your hotel to head north towards the Mae Taeng district. Located about 50km from Chiang Mai, this area is a lush natural paradise, characterized by dense jungle and a vibrant river ecosystem.

Ethical Elephant Encounter: We will visit one of the region’s finest Elephant Sanctuaries. This experience is focused on respect and care: you will have the unique opportunity to feed these majestic animals, walk with them through the forest, and join them for a refreshing bath in the river. It is a magical moment for photography and a deep connection with nature.

Bamboo Rafting on the Ping River: After the sanctuary, we experience the river in the most traditional way. We board a Thai bamboo raft for a gentle 40-minute drift along the Ping River. It is a peaceful way to observe the jungle from a different perspective, surrounded only by the sound of water and birds.

Orchids & Butterflies: Following a lunch break at a local restaurant (with both Thai and international options available), we visit a specialized Orchid and Butterfly Farm. You will walk through tropical gardens housing hundreds of exotic orchid species and colorful butterflies in a protected environment.

Transfer to Chiang Rai: In the afternoon, we begin our scenic 3.5-hour drive across the mountains to reach Chiang Rai. Upon arrival, we will check in at your hotel for the evening.

Overnight in Chiang Rai. (Lunch not included).

Day 6: The White Temple, Myanmar Border & The Golden Triangle

08:30 AM: Your guide will pick you up for the grand finale of our expedition through the wonders of the Far North.

The Surreal White Temple (Wat Rong Khun): We begin with a masterpiece of contemporary art. You will explore the Main Temple (Ubosot), with its dazzling white mirrors, the Hindu Temple, and the beautiful artificial waterfall. It is a symbolic journey between heaven and hell that stands as a highlight of Thai architecture.

Mae Sai Border Market: We then drive to the northernmost point of Thailand. Located right on the border with Myanmar, Mae Sai is famous for its bustling market. Here, you can find a vast array of gemstones, local crafts, and imported goods from Myanmar at very competitive prices—a true paradise for those looking for unique souvenirs.

The Golden Triangle & Mekong Cruise: In Chiang Saen, we reach the promontory for a stunning panoramic view of the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. We then embark on a 30-minute private motor launch cruise on the Mekong River.

Optional: You can choose to cross into Don Xao Island (Laos) with a daily pass (approx. 200 THB) to visit the local Laotian market.

House of Opium: Our final cultural stop is the Opium Museum, where you will learn about the fascinating and complex history of this region through ancient artifacts and historical records, before our return to Chiang Rai.

Transfer: Private transfer to Chiang Rai Airport for your departure flight to Bangkok.
