Day 1: From Chiang Mai to Pai
⚪ 08:30 AM: Meeting with your English-speaking guide at your hotel in Chiang Mai. We will immediately set off along the legendary mountain road leading to Pai, a gem nestled in the Mae Hong Son province, a short distance from the border with Myanmar.
The first stop of the day will be the famous Memorial Bridge, a bridge rich in history originally built by the Japanese army in 1942 during World War II using elephant labour. This structure served as a strategic route to cross the Pai River and launch attacks toward Burma. After this touching immersion into history, we will stop for a relaxing coffee break at the famous and highly scenic Pai In Love café.
⚪ 12:30 PM: Typical lunch featuring Chinese delicacies at the local restaurant Yunnan Food. In the afternoon, we will explore the fascinating village of Baan Santi Chon, a community founded by Chinese refugees from Yunnan that preserves its ancient traditions, clay and straw houses, and evocative tea rituals completely intact.
Before sunset, we will ascend the surrounding hills to visit the Wat Phra That Mae Yen temple. Here, a majestic statue of the Great White Buddha dominates the valley, offering a spectacular panoramic view over the entire green oasis of Pai. At the end of the visits, check-in and overnight stay at the charming Phu Pai Resort.

Day 2: Tham Lod Caves and the Burmese-Style Temples of Mae Hong Son
⚪ 08:00 AM: Meeting with the guide after breakfast. Our first stop takes us inside the beautiful Huai Nam Dang National Park, a protected natural area formed by towering peaks that offers incredible mountain views, tropical wildlife, and houses small settlements of the Lisu hill tribe minority.
We will then move towards one of Asia’s most stunning cave complexes: the ancient underground caves of Tham Lod. A clear underground river flows across the entire mountain for over a kilometer in length. We will board a traditional bamboo raft and, illuminated exclusively by the gas lanterns of local guides, navigate inside the cave admiring giant stalactites, stalagmite, and archaeological remains of prehistoric teak wood coffins.
⚪ 01:00 PM: Lunch at a local restaurant located near the cave archaeological site.
In the afternoon, we will arrive in Mae Hong Son to visit the sacred temple of Phra That Doi Kong Mu, perched on top of a mountain overlooking the entire border valley. Next, we will head down to the city centre to explore the enchanting and historic twin complexes of Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang, built on the shores of the lake and characterized by extraordinary architecture in pure Shan/Burmese style. Return to the hotel for a well-deserved relaxation.

Day 3: Meeting the Long Neck Women and Ob Luang Canyon
⚪ 08:00 AM: Departure from the hotel after breakfast. We will drive along the Pai River bed until we reach the river boarding point. From here, we will take a characteristic local long-tail boat operated by the locals themselves to venture into the jungle and reach the remote village of the Padong Long Neck tribe, the famous and fascinating “long neck women”, keepers of a centuries-old tradition unique in the world.
In the afternoon, on the way back, we will stop to explore the extraordinary Ob Luang National Park. Ob Luang (which literally means “Grand Canyon” in the Thai language) is a spectacular natural gorge carved over millennia by the erosive force of the Mae Chaem River. At its narrowest point, the cliff walls are only 2 meters apart: we will walk across a small bridge suspended 32 meters high to admire the gorge below. Established in 1991, it is Thailand’s 68th national park. Afterwards, return to Chiang Mai.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions about the Secret Thailand Tour (Mae Hong Son)
I suffer from motion sickness: are the 1,864 curves a problem? Can I stop during the journey?
Certainly yes. The tour is completely private and exclusive to you, which means you decide the pace of the journey. You can ask the driver to stop at any time to stretch your legs, take photos, or take a relaxing break. Furthermore, our minivans for exclusive use are always pre-equipped with specific motion sickness remedies and medications at our passengers’ full disposal.
Is the bamboo raft visit to the Tham Lod caves safe?
Yes, it is a completely safe and peaceful experience. The bamboo rafts are expertly hand-guided by local boatmen who know the cave perfectly. The underground river flows calmly, and there are no dangerous rapids. It is a fascinating excursion suitable for travelers of all ages.
What is the correct behavior when visiting tribal villages?
The local populations are extremely hospitable and smiling. We always recommend asking permission through our guide before taking close-up photos of people. Purchasing small handicrafts or handmade souvenirs produced directly by the village women is a great way to support the local economy ethically.
What is recommended to pack in your backpack for this tour?
We recommend comfortable sneakers with good grip (necessary for walking inside the caves and canyon), a good quality insect repellent, sunscreen, and a light sweatshirt for the evenings at the hotel in Pai, where the mountain temperature drop pleasantly cools the air compared to Chiang Mai.
